Workshops

Throughout the year, we send current postgraduate students to schools and colleges to deliver one subject specific taster workshops to Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 students.  These one hour workshops are designed to inspire your students to study physics and astrophysics, giving them an insight into new topics while building upon their current subject knowledge.

These workshops are free of charge to schools and colleges. Please be aware that due to a limited budget we can only deliver live, in-person workshops to schools which are within two hours of the university by public transport.

Please use the booking form below to send a request. For more information on our subject taster workshops please contact us on Physics.Outreach@leeds.ac.uk.

Connect Physics

A series of three workshops that encourage students to think of the bigger picture through connecting different ideas, such as topics from KS3 science, the latest physics research or their everyday lives.

They are able to find out about careers that are available after studying physics and they are given a chance to develop their skills using the scientific method and the peer-review process by tackling an open-ended problem with no given solution.

Suitable for KS3 pupils. Up to 30 pupils per session. Three sessions delivered in series over the academic year.

Tactile Universe

Two one-hour workshops using 3D printed tactile images of galaxies for blind and visually impaired students for inclusion in mainstream classes.  Learn more at https://www.stem.leeds.ac.uk/physics/tactileuniverse/.

Suitable for KS2 to KS5 pupils. Up to 30 pupils per session.

Microbubbles

You could fit ten thousand microbubbles into a single full stop. But now a team of researchers at Leeds is hoping to use these tiny bubbles as a drug delivery device and pupils will design their own versions to treat cancer and other serious diseases.

Suitable for KS4 pupils. Duration 1 hour. Up to 30 pupils per session.

LEGO Particle Physics

Explore the Big Bang and the formation of the Universe from quarks to more complex particles in this engaging and interactive session where concepts from second year undergraduate particle physics are discovered and applied.

Suitable for KS3, KS4 and KS5 pupils. Duration 1 hour. Up to 30 pupils per session.

Discovering Exoplanets

Use the transit method to learn how astrophysicists discover new exoplanets in other extrasolar systems.

Suitable for KS5 pupils.  Durations 1 hour.  Up to 2o pupils per session.  In schools, a computer with access to the internet and an Excel-based software is required.

You can view the instrucitons here: https://www.stem.leeds.ac.uk/physics/workshops/exoplanets/

Rollercoasters!

Pupils learn all about Newton's Laws of Motion - then design, build and test their own roller coasters!

Suitable for KS2 pupils.  Duration 1 hour. Up to 30 pupils per session.

Particle Zoo

Learn all about the Big Bang, particle and the formation of the Universe through our fun and interactive activity. Then, discover your own particles!

Suitable for KS2 pupils.  Duration 1 hour. Up to 60 pupils per session.

Scale of the Solar System

Suitable for KS2 pupils.  Duration 1 hour. Up to 60 pupils per session.

Let's Move to the Moon Space Box

Your school can get a Let's Move to the Moon space case full of equipment for free which contains all of the equipment for KS3 students to complete eight missions that explore different aspects of materials science relevant to building a moonbase.

You'll also get an extra-terrestrial visit from a Discover Materials Ambassador, who will introduce the 8 missions classrooms need to complete over 6-8 weeks to launch their spaceship.
